DesignBoard has starred in some very successful show gardens this year. Kate Gould combined it cleverly with paving in her Greenfingers Charity Garden at RHS Chelsea; Rae Wilkinson cleared the shelves of the Mindfulness gardens’ awards at RHS Chatsworth with Space Within.
DesignBoard Charcoal at BBC Gardener’s World Live, 2019
Now, in its third show feature of the year, DesignBoard composite decking has made an impact in Lucy Bravington’s Design It garden at BBC Gardeners’ World Live, for which she gained Platinum, the highest award available.
The design, inspired by New York’s High Line linear park, had a modern industrial feel softened by planting that focussed on a relaxing mix of greens and textures.
Part of the design included silver-grey plank paving, which gave a pleasing echo of the railway line that was once the purpose of the High Line. It was designed for a couple that love the park’s clean lines and contemporary styling, and complementing the paving in shape and colour was DesignBoard Charcoal, which clad the outside of the apartment and framed the crittal doors that gave onto the garden.
“I really like it,” says Lucy. “It had the right look and with the fixings hidden created a really seamless look.”
In harmony with the luscious green planting palette, DesignBoard sits happily within Lucy’s garden
With the sides of the building clad with DesignBoard, there was plenty of opportunity for visitors to observe our decking planks’ clean lines and precision placement – an easy look to achieve, thanks to the fixing system that Lucy mentioned, which spaces the planks with absolute consistency.
This isn’t the first time a show garden has employed DesignBoard as cladding. The Greenfingers Charity Garden used the green-tinted Greenwich to clad a boundary wall, complementing the pale blooms of Kate Gould’s design. Here, Charcoal created a completely different feel, making a contrasting background that threw the planting relief and gave the airy leaf shapes and textures a background against which to stand out.
The Design It Garden didn’t just win Platinum for Lucy, though. It won Best Construction Award for Design It Landscapes who built it, with their reward being a golden spade from Niwaki. Which just goes to show how you can work with DesignBoard’s attractive looks and invisible fixing system to ensure a really professional finish.
Many congratulations to Lucy and Dan Ryan and his Design It team for a great result. If you’d like more information or free samples of our DesignBoard contemporary decking, then don’t hesitate to contact us.
